Titanium (Ti) was discovered in 1791 by William Gregor, an amateur geologist and pastor in Cornwall, England. The titanium oxide was independently rediscovered in 1795 by German chemist Martin Heinrich Klaproth. He named it for the Titans of Greek mythology.
Metal form titanium is high corrosion resistance, light in weight but great tensile strength. It is as strong as steel but 45% lighter. Its corrosion resistance is comparable to platinum. Melting point over 1,649 degrees Celsius, titanium is a good refractory metal which is resistant to heat, acid and wear.
Beginning from the 1950s, the Soviet Union pioneered the use of titanium in military application, particularly in submarines and high performance jets. During the Cold War period, titanium was considered as a strategic material by the U.S government.
Today, titanium is widely used in many industries, such as aerospace, architecture, medical,
military and watch making. |
